Do the cows actually still wear them? We used to see them a lot in Switzerland (we had two or three summer holidays there when I was a child).

They do indeed, in fact I heard plenty of them clanking about in the mountains this weekend, (just got back, hence this is so late!)… :)

Thank you! Funny how something so common in one country is completely appealing to someone from another country! :)

Oooh so glad you had tagged them as I couldn’t guess what they were. I was thinking pots of some kind. As ever a fab photo Emma xx

I guess you could use them as pots if you turned them upside down! :) Thank you! xx

Reply

lisa September 16, 2012 at 9:50 am

oh what are they for?

Reply

bavaria September 16, 2012 at 7:03 pm

The cows wear them in the mountains here, it makes it easy for the herders to hear where they are! :D

Cool! Glad you tagged it! Steeped in culture…..

xx Jazzy

Reply

bavaria September 16, 2012 at 7:04 pm

Thanks Jazzy! I have been very steeped in culture this weekend, it involved lots of steep moutains and huge gatherings to celebrate the cows coming down to lower pastures in time for winter. Will report back soon! :) xx

Love them, reminds me of the goat bells in Greece!

Reply

bavaria September 17, 2012 at 7:23 pm

Thanks Fiona. You are right, something so nice about it… My Mum was telling me about an article she read the other day where some people moved to Austria and complained about the noise of the cowbells. An alpine version of the UK story where city people complain about cockrells! :D

Great image. I would like to put a bell around Bibsey’s neck sometimes to help me keep her out of mischief. Is that wrong? I’ll get my coat…

Reply

bavaria September 17, 2012 at 7:05 pm

I wonder if they actually did use them in days gone by for keeping track of their kids as well! :D

Reply

Teresa September 17, 2012 at 4:44 pm

That is a great shot! I could use some of those tracking devices to keep track of my goats.

Reply

bavaria September 17, 2012 at 7:03 pm

Thank you Teresa! There are plenty of tiny versions for the goats here too! :)
