First Snow…

by bavaria on October 28, 2012

As soon as I opened my eyes this morning, I knew what was waiting…   It comes with having lived in Scandinavia I guess, where it was the norm for several months of the year – whilst we were there at least.   There are tell tale signs which give it away, such as noticing the room being that much lighter, and the outside world being eerily quiet.  And sure enough…

It wasn’t a complete surprise I suppose.   We were busy with a dim sum menu when the first flakes fell yesterday, surrounded by diners who (judging by the mass exodus to take pictures,  and the amount of shrieking and laughing going on), hadn’t actually seen snow before, and I actually preferred the sight of them enjoying it, to the sight of the fat wet flakes themselves, and the slighty depressing thought that winter had started in October…

I don’t think we expected it to settle though, and it’s definitely not welcome to stay all that long.  But I will secretly admit to enjoying the snow this morning, when it was just me, my camera, and a lot of deer…

Beautiful, beautiful words and photographs. (But I do hope it doesn’t stick around too long. October is far too early for winter to begin!)

I completely agree… November/December fine. But October? Thank you Mary for your lovely words! :)

What utterly beautiful photos. We had a vague sprinkle of snow yesterday morning and some stuck to the mountains. But what you’ve got… crikey!!

Why thank you Frau Dietz, I do hope all is well with you up there? I think this is due to last until Tuesday, and then quite frankly it can go back from whence it came until the Christmas markets start to appear at least! :)

Yes all very well here thank you, I am just trying to get used to my new found freedom – by which I mean not having to study after work; not a reference to B being away till Christmas ;)

May all your (anti-)snow wishes come true :)

That last photo reminds me of one I took a couple of years ago. I was so pleased with it, I had it made into Chrsitmas cards.
Love the one above it too – very spooky.

You describe it so well – the room is lighter and the world outside is eerily quiet. I also love it for 3 minutes until the practicalities of living in a winter wonderland take over. And knowing that winter lasts though to the end of February, it is a bit depressing having start while it’s still Oktober (that’s October in German). still beautiful though.

Thank you! Me too… I am hoping it’s just a false start and it will leave as swiftly as it arrives! For a few weeks anyway! :)

The one with the bright red rose hips contrasting with the snow – love! I knew you lived outside of the city, but didn’t realize how far out you really were. It’s like a storybook. Enjoy your snow – but I hope it melts soon!

Thank you! But that’s the funny thing with Munich, you only need to drive around 10 minutes outside of the city and it’s all farmland… And it’s all farmed all year around! :D We are about a 20 minute drive, and people can’t believe how countryfied it is! We will (and hope it goes soon too)… :D

Gorgeous pictures – love the deer and the rosehips. That eerie silence and light is such an exciting feeling (although it does pall after a while!)

Beautiful!!! I love your photos, as always.

And after growing up in Minnesota, I know exactly what you mean about knowing to expect snow. I actually prefer snow to the freezing sleet we so often get in the UK; snow is so much more manageable!

Stay warm! x

Thanks so much Michelle! :) I have to be grateful I suppose that not everything grinds to a halt when we get snow here too! ;) We will! x
