Well here it is, the obligatory Jubilee post!
This is me, aged two. I look absolutely thrilled about The Queen’s Silver Jubilee celebrations don’t I? In fact it looks like my parents had to bribe me with a packet of Fruit Pastels to get me to agree to having my picture taken at all! Some things never change…
This picture was taken in Germany, where my Dad worked, and we lived at the time. It seems like I am not ever destined to spend a Jubilee in the UK (not that I’m particularly a Royalist, I just like the excuse for a knees-up, and the opportunity to feel patriotic occasionally! Plus I will admit that my friend’s celebration photos – up and down the UK – are making me feel slightly homesick!)! For the Golden Jubilee, Mr R and I were in Istanbul for our friend’s wedding (a story for another day…), and for this – The Diamond Jubilee, I find myself back in Germany again bizarrely enough!
Not to be left out, we had our own little corner of England yesterday afternoon at an English friend’s house, where we overdosed on real cups of tea (in the best china of course!), scones, strawberries and cream, sausage rolls, cucumber sandwiches, plus the odd glass of Pimms! And best of all, it felt like home…
Would the German neighbours have minded? Not in the slightest… Lots of them have spoken to me enthusiastically about the Jubilee (unprompted!) and what an achievement it is for the English Queen. I even heard our National anthem on the radio yesterday, which was quite quite surreal!
But the main reason I wish I was at home this long weekend? To celebrate my little sister’s birthday tomorrow… Have a lovely day sweetie. I miss you! Oh and have a very happy first wedding anniversary as well! Can’t believe it’s been a whole year since that lovely day already!… Not sure I will ever forget the green hair incident!!
Cin cin everyone! Enjoy!

Hi. Love your blog! I have just moved from the UK to Christchurch, NZ – my husband is an engineer! I’ve started a blog to basically keep the folks back home up-to-date but finding I now really want to make it interesting for others…anyways thanks for inspiring x

I couldn’t find a photo from the Silver Jubilee but did hunt out a commemorative mug from 1977. But why can’t I remember the Golden Jubilee? We didn’t have a big fuss unless I missed it.
I’m so pleased you are a finalist in the travel category for the MADs. Looking forward to having a great night in September xx
bavaria says
Maybe you enjoyed yourself so much and can’t remember a thing!!
Thank you very much m’dear, likewise! And I am thrilled to be amongst some esteemed company! And yes, I can’t wait until September either! :) xx

your photograph is priceless! LOVE it :)
this weekend’s been such a damp squib – a steady, determined drizzle, and greygrey skies! at least your post cheered me up with all that gorgeous jubilee food. and the happy, sunshiny flower on Silent Sunday.
BIG congrats on the mad awards nomination – it is very well-deserved. your blog is one of the loveliest to read.
bavaria says
Thanks for the lovely comment Pia, tis very kind of you! Fingers crossed the sun comes out tomorrow and Tuesday for you all! I am hoping the Queen doesn’t catch a cold, it was a long time for anyone to be standing about in that weather!! :)

What a beautiful spread! Glad you enjoyed the occasion in absentia – y’know, I reckon expats do these patriotic events the very best anyway. No better place to be on the fourth of July, for instance, than at an American BBQ in…England :)
bavaria says
Thank you Rachel, I reckon you might be right you know! Enjoy the holiday, and all that red, white and blue! :)

What a lovely idea, to have a home from home celebration. The spread looks yummy, and very traditional.
bavaria says
Thank you Mum of All Trades… The only thing missing was party rings! :)

Happy Jubes, man! ;) I have failed to do any queen-related celebrating at all this weekend, so I am doing it now, retrospectively and vicariously, through you *untangles virtual bunting from hair* Your tea party looks fab. Is that proper white sliced bread?!
bavaria says
Here you go, have a scone!! :) Happy Jubilee back at ya :) Yes, it is indeed proper sliced white bread… I have no idea where it came from, but it was gooood! :)
Mary says
Now that’s a proper spread! I’m glad you got to recreate a little corner of England for your jubilee celebrations. Funny how these occasions get to us isn’t it? (Have just read the green-haired post too – hilarious!)
bavaria says
Thanks Mary! Hope there’s some red, white and blue with you as well :) Glad you like the green hair post… I couldn’t believe they picked that day, of all days!!! :) x

Hi Emma, what a splendid jubilee table you put together!!! Beautiful. I love the picture of you at the silver jubilee. I vividly remember it, we had a fancy dress parade at school and I went along as little red riding hood with a red cape that became a favourite item of clothing for years!!!! Well done on your blog nomination too x Kitty B
bavaria says
Hello Kitty! How are you? Can’t take the credit for the amazing spread, I only made some scones! It was a great afternoon, and it was nice for the children to celebrate something to do with home, just like I did all those years ago! Love the story of you with your cape, funny the things we get attached to :) xx
Erica Price says
Nice to think of you celebrating the jubilee in Germany. I love the look of that jubilee cheesecake. Congratulations for getting to the final of the Mads. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.
bavaria says
Thanks Erica, that’s kind of you! Yes, we had a ball…I can confirm that the Union Jack cheesecake was very good as well :)
MsCaroline says
Congratulations on your nomination, and well-deserved!
Love all the photos – I’m not English, but have a soft spot in my heart for the Queen – my (Canadian) mum grew up collection photos and newspaper clippings of the royal family and must have passed on some of that appreciation to me. Regardless of one’s opinion on the monarchy/royal family, it’s still an anniversary worth noting, and a job well done!
bavaria says
Thank you Caroline! Glad you like the photos, the one of me makes me laugh, and is quite typical!! You are right, it’s still something worth noting however you feel about them :)
blurofwoodsmoke says
The Jubilee cheesecake is making me hungry! Looks delicious!

It was delicious! Could do with a slice right now actually! Enjoy your long weekend! :)
