Heart shaped cake-pops for my almost Valentine’s day baby to take to school on the occasion of her 9th birthday… Granted they aren’t nearly as cute as the boss-eyed owl pops of last year, but having recently become aware that she missed sharing her birthday with King Cupid by a meagre couple of hours (something I think she was quite miffed about – until I pointed out that any future birthday gatherings might be quite boring surrounded by couples gazing into one another’s eyes!) they were deemed appropriate and necessary for her to take into class…
Her main birthday cake request this year most definitely met with my approval (and indeed may well have been influenced by my lifetime infatuation) – as having had a slight reprieve in the cake decorating department last year (with a simple chocolate cake demand), I had wondered what I might be creating this birthday. Thankfully Moomin Troll proved pretty straightforward (especially compared to CatBus circa 2012!), but a little part of me was slightly tempted to make her a “Little My” cake instead as Small Girl is so much like her in so many ways!
Birthdays always begin in our house with a specially requested breakfast and flowers around the birthday plate – a family tradition from my side that I have always loved. And then it was time to spend the day in Munich with her best friend, shopping, grown up lunching, and then hours spent trying on bangles, necklaces and huge clip-on earrings in many a shop. Which as lovely as it was, definitely gave me a glimpse into her teenage years, and made me wonder where the years have gone!
And now a little note to the birthday girl herself – as with my last blog (although I still need to get it printed!) this too will be made into a book one day for the Small People to look back on, and hopefully not ask me why we couldn’t have just had a conventional life…
So happy birthday sweetheart. I know I say it every birthday (with different ages obviously!), but I honestly can’t believe you are nine years old… It occurred to me recently that you have now spent more than half of your life away from the UK, which made me a little sad, especially given the people and things that you miss out on back at home. But I like to think (and hope!) that this life has given you an extra determination and tenacity of spirit, plus a natural curiosity of the world around you. Perhaps most importantly though it has helped shape your sweet nature, your infectious sense of humour and the empathy you have towards others – whoever they are and wherever they are from. Carry on like that my sweet, and you won’t go far wrong in life…
(Excuse Moomin Troll’s eye in this last picture, the Six Year old had been seen close by beforehand!!)

Love the cake. No confectionary is safe from finger lick marks in this house either.
bavaria says
I am hoping it was just a finger, I think it might have been a direct link… :D

My son is 9 in a couple of weeks too, doesn’t time fly? Sadly he’ll have to suffice with taking sweets to school, but I do plan on making a cake. Looks like it will be a Minecraft one but at least it should be easy!

Those cake pops are just divine, I really must learn how to make them and I adore the Moomin cake. Is it still on TV where you are?
bavaria says
It was definitely on TV in the last country we lived in, but I don’t watch so much Bavarian TV as they dub everything…. I hear it’s the best way to learn the language though, so perhaps I should watch more to help me improve! Thank you! :)

Thanks Kirsty, I think that tradition came from my great grandmother once upon a time, I wonder if it had been passed down to her too? :)

I loved all of this – especially the flowers around the plate! Ah…for a little girl….*sigh.* I’m very happy, though, that I was not blogging when my boys were small in the 90/early 2000s, because I’m not at all artistically talented or creative in the least – and would have felt very inadequate as a mother seeing things like you are able to make! Keep posting them, though – maybe they’ll inspire me and someday I’ll excel as a grandmother..; )
Have tagged you on a question thingy over at my blog if you have time and feel like doing it!
bavaria says
Thanks so much, and I imagine that one day you will make the best Grandmother! :) xx

I think you’ve given both your children the most amazing opportunities and while sometimes it’s hard being far away from family and shifting and settling isn’t always ideal – your children are having the most amazing and memorable childhood, a childhood that will serve them well as adults.
9 sounds scarily grown-up.
Love the cake.
bavaria says
Thank you Gemma, I really appreciate that… xx
