That lovely Winter festival that I became slightly addicted to last year (and made any excuse to return to time and again!)? It has a Sister. Fonder of the summer months, and held instead at the ever impressive Olympia Park…
And whilst there are obvious similarities between the two – the fantastic music from anywhere and everywhere, the global food stalls from all four corners, interesting stalls to peruse etc. Perhaps thanks to the setting, this one has a real summer festival feel to it (reminding me of a few of our UK festivals without the occasional rain and wellie boots!), with outdoor bars and bier gartens everywhere to sit and relax in, I can’t think of a better way to spend a summer’s day… Plus it’s great for Small People, as Summer Tollwood has a tent dedicated entirely to them, and in which mine spent a happy hour or so yesterday afternoon, making animal masks to decorate the huge ark that sits just outside (that also doubles as a playground), creating rattle snakes by hammering nails through bottle tops and threading them onto wire (can’t imagine that being allowed at home – but we had no squashed fingers!), and in the Kinder Kitchen making crocodile sandwiches.
I will let the pictures speak for themselves, but if you are in Munich between now and the 27th July (it all began on Wednesday) then I really recommend that you get yourself down there!
Do check out ArtsinMunich if you are somewhat summer festival obsessed too – Rachel really is the Bavarian expert!

It looks such a wonderful festival to walk around and take in all it has to offer
Thank you, it’s brilliant. I am always gutted we miss Glastonbury and Bestival etc. so this one is a small compromise! :D
I love that roadside sign sculpture – I’ve never seen anything like it before.
Brilliant isn’t it? I love it too! :)
Oh how beautiful – such colour! I’m really looking forward to exploring some events in Europe over the next few years now that the children are old enough to appreciate a bit more culture.
I do hope you have Munich on the list somewhere! :)
it all looks pretty fantastic i must admit!
Thanks Otilia! (:
Looks fantastic and I like the artwork. Would love to go to this.
Thanks Sam, it is a great place! :)
This looks great Emma. As I sit here trying to mentally accept that with our house extension work looming that we won’t be having a holiday this year I am sulking! I *may* have stamped a foot too !
Oh no… But oh yey to House extension, good luck with it all! :) x
Oh, I’ve been wanting to visit Bavaria for the longest time and this has just made my longing so much worse! This looks like the sort of festival that we’d absolutely love.
I really think you would! Thank you Jayne! :)
When the weather is good, nothing beats having a wander, listening to music, trying new foods….
Exactly Louisa! Not as crowded as many of the festivals in the UK either! :) Thank you…
sounds like a great day out for everyone, and brilliant it’s on for such a stretch. Any festivals near here seem to have been and gone before I get my act together! x
I think that’s what I like about it too, gives you a chance to visit more than once! :) Thank you… x
LOVE LOVE LOVE all those hanging lanterns!!! What a colourful and amazing festival this is!
Thank you T. I love those lanterns they are so pretty aren’t they? :)
Ohhh that looks like so much fun! I love the wooden objects with the Aboriginal art – are they rainsticks or didgeridoos? The big sculpture made of road signs is brilliant too. I love me a wee festival.
Didgeridoos – we didn’t buy one! I love the road sign sculpture too, so pretty! Thanks Ruth! :)
It looks like so much fun!! I love it when festivals like this hit cities and give everyone a chance to enjoy a relaxing day outdoors in the sunshine :)
Thanks Shikha, you could definitely pretend you are in the middle of the countryside here! :)
It looks like loads of fun, you have captured some great photos there. Mich x
Thanks Mich! :) xx
Looks/sounds brilliant!xx
Thanks spud. It is! I think you and A need one of those deckchairs for your garden! xx
Looks so colourful and fun. May have to arrange to go next year :)
I think you all need to do a meet up here anyway, I can take you all! :)
Oh man! I knew I shouldn’t have clicked through on this one—cue homesickness! We lived right across the street so we went down there for dinner loads more than I’d like to admit. The whole feel is so unique and quite edgy for Munich, don’t you think?! So glad your little people loved it too!
Definitely get you on the edgy for Munich, think that’s why I love it so much! And I would completely be down there for dinner every night if we lived closer! Thanks Lauren, hope you are both really well! :)
It looks lovely, the kind of place I’d love to stroll around, so much to look at.
It really reminds me of the market-place at Glastonbury – happy memories! :D Thanks Mari! :) x
Ooohhh, that looks like my kind of festival! Now I’ll have to go back and read about the winter one!
The winter one is just as magical, just a little different (and definitely colder!) :D x
