The Five Year old has never been overly fussed when it comes to ice cream. I would go far as to say he’s actually incredibly fussy about it. He can’t be fobbed off with any old muck, and quite strangely would rather not have it at all most of the time…
Unless that is you’re talking about a Spaghetti Eis (no prizes for guessing why it’s called that!), then it’s a whole different story! Discovered by Grandad on his last visit, (and who I reckon quite fancied the look of it himself) a Spaghetti Eis is usually vanilla in flavour, having been pushed through a press to create the pasta shape. It’s not all ice-cream – the middle is usually whipped cream, and the sauce is homemade (in this instance) strawberry in lieu of tomato (obviously!). Finished off with a sprinkling of grated white chocolate for “parmesan”, and it’s apparently “the best” (but I have a suspicion that novelty factor has something to do with its desirability too).
I am used to the incredulous stares as he’s presented with this concoction that’s more often than not the size of his head… But if he’s allowed to choose, and this is on the menu, it has the Five Year Old’s name written all over it. “He’s never going to eat all of that!?” say the looks as it’s placed directly in front of the expectant boy with eyes as big as saucers, and he immediately informs me that he “will share, but just not at the moment”… I have been here before however, and I’m quite happy to just sit and bide my time… There’s plenty to look at and think about in Sarcletti’s* anyway – like imaginary future orders on my part, and what the ice-cream connoisseurs around me are having. This is in fact supposed to be one of the best Gelaterias in Munich, and with up to 60 authentic flavours available daily (plus lovely service), it’s not hard to understand why…
And soon enough, having given this particular Spaghetti Eis a fair demolition attempt (it doesn’t usually take that long in the grand scheme of things) – the spoon is pushed across the table and into my hand with a “here you go Mummy, it’s a bit big… You can have some now”. And as the plate is pushed towards me, the mothers around me smile knowingly…
Good things do indeed come to those that wait!…
*disclaimer – we weren’t asked to mention Sarclettis, we just like to recommend good stuff!

I now know all about Spaghetti Eis – brilliant! Good enough for grandpas & 5-year-olds = good enough for me.
bavaria says
It is seriously good! Thanks Ebe! :)

I’m alone in this given the other comments but, for me – it actually looks rather horrible.
bavaria says
Honestly it’s not that bad! :D
Mama Syder says
Yum! That looks delicious! x
bavaria says
Oh it was! Thank you Mama S! x

I have two very strange boys in my home – both husband and son aren’t pudding people. Are they mad? So in restaurants it’s always me, the piggy mum, who orders a dessert while the two men sit and wait patiently for me to tuck into my pud.
I would adore this – truly yummy looking.
bavaria says
I think that sounds like the perfect scenario actually, not “I will share, just only in a minute for you! :) Anyway, you can try it when you do a Mum’s gone to Munich!! :D
EllAdvice says
Oh, I would never have thought this is ice cream just by looking at the photo but it loos really tasty now that I know what it is. Too bad there is no good ice cream (that I know of) in London.
bavaria says
Thank you… Can’t really recommend any in central London as things change so much the ones I used to know of probably don’t exist anymore, but the one I LOVED in Richmond is still there – Gelateria Danieli – on Brewer’s Lane if I remember correctly! :)
Pia says
oh goodness! spaghetti eis is pure genius.
and that’s a good line – “will share, but just not at the moment” – i’m going to borrow it soon.
bavaria says
Thanks Pia… I don’t blame him, I hate sharing stuff like that! :D x
Jazzygal says
That looks OMG-amazing! I laughed at his ‘will share but not just at the moment’ and am astounded at your ability to sit in a restaurant with such delights all around and wait for him to share!
xx Jazzy
bavaria says
Thank you Jazzy… Honestly some of the concoctions here are truly incredible, and I would order for myself, but having learned my lesson previously with a Spaghetti Eis, I do try to be good! :D xx
Helen says
Oh my goodness i have never seen anything like that befor what great fun that looks.if sophie saw this we would have to book tickets to come and try some.
bavaria says
You must! I have a little male companion for Sophie, maybe they could share and we could order something more grown up! :D
Michelle | The American Resident says
My daughter is exactly the same–fussy (snobby?) about ice cream but I suspect the novelty value of this would have appealed to her younger self as well!! How clever!
bavaria says
I am glad it’s not just him. Both of my children aren’t fussed about fizzy drinks either, isn’t that obligatory at the ages of 8 and 5?!! :D
Molly says
Is it bad that I rather fancy the look of that myself?!
bavaria says
Not at all bad! It’s very good! :D Thanks Molly!
Sian says
Oh my goodness. I need one of those. That is the most amazing looking ice cream — ( I am in a very hungry pre-dinner state which may be increasing its appeal – but by very little I am sure.) Do you think I can get away with ordering one for a 17 month old knowing that it would be mine, mine, mine? :)
bavaria says
I think that’s a very wise idea indeed Sian, thanks for your comment! :)
Cathy says
That looks so good, I think my kids would go wild for something like that, thanks for sharing :-)
bavaria says
Thanks Cathy, I still can’t believe that if I just gave him a normal bowl of vanilla icecream with a bit of strawberry sauce on it, he probably wouldn’t eat it! :D
Sarah Hill says
Looks wonderful, a real child (and grown up’s) treat. I always used to love waiting for my boys to be full of the big slice of cake they couldn’t quite finish or the cream laden hot chocolate but as they’ve got older and bigger there is less and less for me. I now have to order my own, maybe one day you will too. xx
bavaria says
Despite it’s size, I think that’s highly likely too Sarah… Better make the most of it now I guess! Thank you xx

This popped up in my reader with nothing but the first photo, and I knew immediately what it was – Spaghettieis! Always a favorite and actually something I used to make with my German students for class parties (you can put the ice cream through a ricer to get the noodle-like strands.) Lucky for you that he couldn’t quite manage the whole thing! For some reason, MrL seems to get most of the leftovers at our house. He refers to himself as ‘The Jackal’ for just that reason. ; )
bavaria says
Thank you Caroline… It does actually taste better than untouched vanilla though doesn’t it? Love that you can make it with a ricer! Yes, very lucky on my part. Honestly you should have heard the fuss when he discovered that the children’s version here is actually multicoloured… Turns out he’s a bit of a Spaghetti Eis purist and we therefore had to order an adults plain vanilla version… Shame!! :D
Midlife Singlemum says
Until I read the description I thought it was spaghetti with strawberry sauce and cheese. – I was ready to turn up my nose I admit. It sounds delicious.
bavaria says
I reckon that might be not at all bad though… I bet my two woudl eat it! Thank you! :)
Brinabird and Son says
Oh I love ice cream! My wee man has taken a liking to it too as well. A must when we visit in the summer in Italy!
bavaria says
Thank you Brina! It is THE best there… I think our close proximity to Italy means that we get some good stuff too thankfully! :) Enjoy!
Kelloggsville says
I NEED one of those, now please lol
bavaria says
I quite fancied one this morning writing this too! Thanks K! :)
