Yesterday was the last of a series of five Bank holidays that we get here in May… And trust me Reader, the weather has been quite typical of Bank holidays in general – i.e. truly appalling. With torrential rain, gales and fresh snow blanketing the mountains, you would be forgiven for thinking it was February at the moment rather than just about June… But grasping at straws in the hope that it would clear up, we went for a walk at one of our favourite places for some fresh air…
One of the good things about The Small People having experienced a couple of years of Danish Education (and as is the custom here to a certain extent), they think nothing of playing outside in all weathers, and so they at least never ever moan about spending time outside when it’s less than pleasant. Unlike their Mother. But I managed to muster up a lot more enthusiasm when it became obvious that the meadows were covered in a carpet of wild flowers in various colours, shapes and sizes… Suddenly the rain wasn’t a problem any more, the fact that I didn’t have my macro lens with me was…
Eager to find more strange and beautiful botanical specimens, we ventured onwards and upwards in the direction of the tiny chapel that perches on top of the hill, with swallows skimming the tops of our heads (in what I will now take as a sure sign that the weather is about to take a turn for the worse – if that’s at all possible). We took shelter in the woods for a short while before one of us fell in a puddle, and that made the decision to get back to the car an easy one…
The small person with a muddy derriere pointed out this bedraggled dandelion to me as we squelched our way back, and decided that he felt a little bit like that. I have to say that I did too, we were all thoroughly soaked – but it was worth it for the kaleidoscope… We will be back if the sun ever comes out…

Why do they have 5 bank holidays in May? If it were in Feb/March I’d have guessed it was for skiing. If it were in July.August I’d say to make the most of the summer. But why May?
bavaria says
May day and a huge amount of religious holidays I think, although I am not 100% sure… I thoroughly approve though! :D
