This is a public service announcement. I am sorry to report that it may indeed be mid-September, but there is already snow in Bavaria. Yes, it may well be at a height of 2,962 metres at the top of the Zugspitze, but I am pretty sure that this time last year we were still in short sleeves!
Apart from our incredible iglu adventure back in April (they are taking bookings now by the way!), we haven’t been to visit the top of one of our favourite mountains for a little while, and as Grandad is currently with us, Saturday seemed like a good a time as any. To make a change, we thought we would drive that few kilometres further, and experience the ascent from the Austrian side and the view from the top. Except that when we got there, there was no view to speak of, just plenty of cloud, and an awful lot of white stuff…
It was still worth doing though and the Small People thought it was brilliant being able to have a snowball fight so soon!
It is interesting to note that the Zugspitze might be the highest peak in Germany (you can walk a few steps from one country to the other at the top, which is always fun (especially if you are 6!) !), but it is not the highest mountain in Austria – which means that (at this time of year anyway!) there are no queues of German Pilgrims for the cable car, a half-empty restaurant, easy parking at the bottom and an empty museum (which turns out to be a lot more indepth and interesting than the one a few steps away!)…
Anyway, don’t say I didn’t warn you. Like it or not, Winter’s not that far off… But look on the bright side, the ski season might open slightly earlier!
Snow????
Wowsers.
Cracking pictures
Thanks Jane… I know, far far too early! :D
The weather is having a laugh at my expense. How can it be snowing when we were experiencing 40 degree heat there only a few weeks ago!
I think it might have something to do with the butter god… ! :D xx
Dearie me! Hope it’s just a blip and hasn’t set in, seems far too early!
Country hopping sounds fun :)
Fingers crossed! :D Thank you! :) x
I love snow and winter! I even bought some mulled wine from M and S yesterday.
I can just imagine Z and S running from one country to the other, how much fun :-)
Thanks Emma… It definitely nearly is gluhwein season here too! :D xx
*puts hands over ears and sings la la la la * Sorry. Not nice news. Beautiful pics though ;)
Thanks Anya… Hopefully a bit warmer by the weekend! :D xx
Oh no, I must as well dig my head out of the sand and face reality. Winter is here :( We switched on the heater for the first time today, Emma.
The first photograph is just stunning though – I could almost hear the icy wind on the other side of the glass.
It’s funny because I was cross at first because I wanted the glass to be clear, but so many people have said it adds to the picture! Thank you! :) xx
Aw fond memories of skiing and visiting a fairytale castle near Munich as a teen. But that was In January not Sept brrrrrr!
Neuschwanstein perhaps? Very beautiful area! :) Thanks PennY! :)
Snow? Already? What the dickens is going on ?!
As long as it doesn’t come down any lower for a while longer yet! Thanks Annie! :)
Snow already??!!
A snowball fight in September sounds fun though.
The best thing ever apparently. Thank you! :)
Th e man I sit next to at work was there last weekend – small world!
How funny! I did hear some fellow Brits. Was he there in a big family group? A small world indeed! :D
Wow. We are going through a cold snap here at the moment…. but it’s supposed to warm up again towards the end of the week *phew*. Fantastic pictures, especially the first one. X
I think parts of Austria woke up to unexpected snow this morning… I hope it warms up here too! :D x
Argh!! Already?? Glühwein, anyone? xx
Yes please!! :D xx
I can definitely confirm (with photographs to prove it) that we were in short sleeves exactly a year ago yesterday, on 16th September last year!! On a beautiful sunny day we sat outside and had lunch. Uggg it is just too early for snow!! xx
I don’t know what’s going on. Lots of snow in Austria today! :D xx
