In the absence of any British Bluebells for baby photo opportunities this year, may I present my very own “Tom Thumb” – in amongst the tulips in the pick your own field just up the road from us.
I have written about this phenomenon a few times now – from blueberries, to pumpkins and beyond, Bavaria is fantastic for a pick your own field, and it’s going to be Dahlia season soon, my absolute favourite flower – providing you give them a good shake to check for earwigs (which might be an old wives tale, but I am not taking any risks…) before you get back in the car!
(fear not German friends who will doubtless note the lack of socks, it was a warm day…)
what about this one?
who put my socks back on?
quality control testing…
I am used to sometimes getting funny looks as a mother abroad, there are obviously a few things that make me stick out like a sore thumb – my children not wearing snow suits past March for example (unless it’s snowing obviously!), or the lack of obligatory massive square backpacks for my children to go to school with, and the absolute dead giveaway – their international school uniform on the days they have to wear it (uniforms are definitely not the norm!). So, it wasn’t any great shock receiving strange looks for carting a bumbo into the field for the baby to sit in whilst we deliberated over which tulips to pick – and believe me, with The Small People, there’s a lot of deliberating to be done as the farmer had surpassed himself beyond the usual red and yellow variety!
After around 45 minutes we came away with 20 beautiful tulips and three scrawny lesser examples that were picked a little over-enthusiastically, but as the end recipient I was of course happy with them all.
what is this stuff?
And the baby? He looked happy with his little dalliance amongst the flowers, didn’t pick any, and only tried to eat one leaf. A far more enjoyable solution than taking him in a sling and having him de-head a few dozen from a prime position, or for me to have to struggle to get his pushchair through the mud. I think he enjoyed himself…
Roll on dahlia season…

Pick your own flowers is such a great idea – makes a change from just fruit.
Your little man looks very happy in his little blue seat x

Awww.. this is SO CUTE!! Beautiful baby and beautiful tulips. I love Dahlias too! I only found out very recently about Dahlias when Gardens by the Bay Singapore brought them in earlier this year and it was love at first sight.

Those back packs that German kids wear always seem to be amazing and apparently they are quite expensive too. I can imagine your children stand out a bit if they aren’t wearing all the usual gear.
Emma says
They are hugely expensive, about 120 Euros, for a pretty ugly bag! :D
