Navigating our way across town (thanks to a broken down train), Mr R and I spoke about the restaurant we were trying to find, and how it offers only a set menu. This is a concept I am not averse to for a couple of reasons – a) It’s a great way to try something you wouldn’t usually choose, and b) Mr R is so indecisive he would sit and deliberate for hours if he could…
As we walked (in what was hopefully the right direction), I joked that the only time I wouldn’t be so happy about this arrangement was if I was presented with an English dish I am not so fond of – Liver and Onions (a meal we occasionally got served at home and which I hated with a passion – until we got a dog, turns out he didn’t hate it quite as much as me!)…
Broeding is very much a special occasion (making up for rubbish previous birthday restaurant) kind of place, and is well known for its amazing selection of Austrian wines – something they embarked upon almost 25 years ago when the restaurant first opened. I think that for every bottle offered here, Broeding’s staff actually knows the maker by name, and I love Broeding’s passion for the stuff…
And the food? Although I had joked about the possibility of being presented with one of my lesser favourite English dishes, it was a pleasant surprise to discover that we happened to visit on an evening when the menu featured a definite English undercurrent, albeit a much more favourable one! We began with a black pudding strudel (think wonton here!) on top of a delicate asian salad, which left both of us wishing it was much much bigger! There was nothing English about what was up next – Essence of Mushrooms with Mung Bean ravioli – the broth was delicious, and I am not sure I have ever had mung bean before – but it worked really well. Then on to a succulent chunk of cod and sweet potato fries (fish and chips!! Not a mushy pea in sight though sadly!)
By now the couple on the table next to us had obviously overheard us speaking. I guessed that they had also made the English connection with the food as their conversation was interspersed with words like “fish and chips” and “black pudding” together with furtive glances at us. As they were a course or so ahead, they leaned over and excitedly told us that next we would be pleased as next it was “English Roast Beef!”… Whilst not accompanied by Yorkshire Pudding, it was actually a beautiful piece of entrecôte served with seasonal asparagus and a rather lovely dauphinoise, a dish I would be more than happy to be presented with in any English pub on a Sunday lunchtime! Dessert was a mousse of curd cheese with pear and a chocolate sauce which was equally perfect, followed by an Alpine cheese with laurel jelly.
Each course was served by super friendly and professional staff – who delivered the personal history of each different wine and absolutely anything at all you wanted to know about the food, right down to the name of the cow that made the alpine cheese that ended the meal (Dolly – in case you’re wondering)! The atmosphere was relaxed and unhurried too.
We loved the food and the service here – Broeding has been here for 24 years and remains at the No.1 spot on internet ratings for Munich restaurants for a reason. Highly, highly recommended.

Looks beautiful food! I’ve never eaten anywhere with a set menu, my husband wouldn’t go for it I don’t think as he’s rather fussy. I like to be surprised (although I’m not a big meat eater so I’d have to be a pain and ask for veggie food!) Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Jennifer… We have been to a couple now (and once spent a week on an island in Vietnam) where there is absolutely no choice. I really thought I would hate it, but I really like it once in a while! :D

I don’t think I’d be able to eat liver though either. I tried to make it for the kids once and I couldn’t eat for the next day because the smell had turned my stomach.
Haha… I think my children are very lucky that I have never ever thought to make it for them… :D

I’ve never been to Munich but my hubby has, and loved it. In fact I think he’s going with work again soon. The dishes look delicious, I wish I ate meat, and then I would definitely pop on a plane to try them. *and meet you* What happens with the set menu if you are veggie?
They will provide you with your own special vegetarian menu I do believe…. You must visit Munich, it actually caters quite well for people that don’t eat meat! :) I make a good tour guide too! :)
Oh that was cruel, I was dallying on the computer, just wondering if I could last out till lunch time without being tempted to eat anything when I read your blog and my mouth is now watering. Glad you had a good meal out at last! Mind you the delicious wild garlic ravioli we had at the airport last time I was over still lingers in my memory! x
