Long term readers will already know how much I love a market – especially one that involves food!
I spent hours in Copenhagen’s Torvehallerne, and you would find me most weeks (usually getting told off for picking something or other up) wandering Munich’s beautiful Viktualienmarkt…
Whilst we don’t have anything quite on that scale in our present city, we do have a really lovely Farmer’s market… It takes place in the city centre every two weeks, and as last weekend was the twentieth anniversary (and we were up with the larks anyway as you might expect with a Three-Year-old!) we headed into town for an early breakfast and a little bit of food treasure hunting afterwards!
Whilst we are originally from the area, having lived away for a long time a lot of these local businesses are new to us, so it was so lovely to see such a huge variety of locally grown produce. Hampshire is a bit of a treasure trove when it comes to local food, and it happens to do a great line in locally made wines and gin too!
It’s obviously asparagus season as there was masses of the stuff. We also met The Queen (in bee form) thanks to Mrs B’s Bees. I could have spent hours watching her move about the frame (she had a tiny blue dot painted at the end of her tail so you can easily spot her!)…
We eventually came home with rhubarb, oysters, cheese, bread, one beautiful giant tomato (Isle of Wight tomatoes are amazing!) and flowers (not for eating obviously)…
I will leave you with a few pictures from our morning anyway, It’s something I did whilst we lived abroad so it only seems right to give you a glimpse of what a decent Farmer’s Market is like at “home” too…
Talking about our new city, I have started a food and produce blog called Winchester Eats (and have had to join a gym because of it!!)… I would love it if you followed! It’s not just about local restaurants, but I feature recipes and the like too! www.winchestereats.co.uk Instagram Facebook and Twitter

I love markets like this! The produce always looks sooo good, much better than what you can pick up in the supermarkets.

I love the farmers market because its a great way to support local farmers and keep the money local rather than pay towards big companies. The food is always fresher at the markets too. I love your photos because they bring the food to live.

Thanks so much Vicky!

I love Winchester and the market there. I lived there for 3 years almost 20 years ago, but it doesn’t look like it’s changed at all!
Emma says
I bet it hasn’t much! Thanks Sally :)

It always amazes me what treats you can find hidden in a local market. And you can’t beat the freshness of products found.
Emma says
Absolutely! Thanks so much Sarah!
