The amount of our visitors who have expressed surprise at the beauty Bavaria has to offer, and have said that they had always previously thought of Germany as a grey and uninspiring country, will never cease to amaze me. And a little like my determination to stamp out the myths that all English Food is bad, and that we Brits all have terrible teeth, M’Lud, I present these pictures of Beautiful Berchtesgaden as my first piece of evidence. It’s little wonder that a huge amount of historical figures (!) enjoyed spending time here, it’s truly stunning! My last Silent Sunday was taken there too, for those wondering.
We took a boat out across the emerald Konigsee itself, together with a pretzel eating dog, fighting children (not mine for once) and a Captain who stopped the boat in the middle of the lake, to play the trumpet. It seems that everyone apart from us was expecting this to happen, and you could almost hear a pin drop as he raised the trumpet to his lips and played a tune, only to have it answered beautifully by several echos from the surrounding mountains.
We stopped to have a look at St. Bartholomä, the beautiful domed church that takes precedence on the water’s edge on the other side of the lake. Certain people thought that the domes looked like chocolate teacakes which made them hungry, and insisted we stopped at the rather gorgeous Bier Garten for a drink and a snack. Somehow The Five Year Old ended up with a glass of buttermilk, quite traditional here, but he wasn’t altogether that keen on it. Thankfully there was nothing wrong with our bier, and apart from all patrons being periodically frightened to death by large conkers dropping onto their tables, all was well.
A quick paddle in the freezing lake afterwards, all of us stunned into semi-silence by the gorgeous surroundings, we then headed back to Konigsee. This journey could have been relaxing, but the Seven Year Old was desperate for the toilet, and this particular boat was incredibly slow.
All essentials taken care of, we then spent the afternoon admiring the view, eating ice-cream and buying unsuitable items like wooden catapults with Konigsee inscribed into them (for the time being forgotten about on a high shelf), thanks for that one Grandad.
A beautiful place, and I would highly recommend a visit if you should be in the area. Did I mention it was good for shopping?

I am amazed to hear that so many people think that Germany is drab! It is so beautiful, and even just everyday older architecture is so sweet and charming. One of the best things about moving to Germany for me was that most of my views were beautiful, all the time!
I love that last picture of the nuns shopping– really cute!
bavaria says
It is indeed! It’s the same as people thinking it rains in the UK EVERY day! So glad you like the picture of the Nuns too! :)

Breathtakingly beautiful. I know what you mean about the stereotypes – Austria ans Switzerland are supposed to look like this and Germany is supposed to look like an East Berlin housing estate. I also remembering being surprised by how beautiful (and clean) Germany is. Tbh, I was a bit shocked by how much I liked it – that wasn’t supposed to happen.
bavaria says
This area is so close to Austria, but there are other bits of Bavaria that are just as stunning! I love Berlin too though, in fact I love most of the world, there are only a couple of countries that I wouldn’t be bothered about visiting again actually :D
