Back to Austria briefly, for a quick trip to the Naschmarkt…
As I have divulged before, I have a slight obsession with food markets. Typically, they are one of the first things I research before visiting a new place… Apart from showing you how passionate (or not) its citizens are about all matters culinary, quite often they are the heart (or should that be belly?) of a city too, and whilst tourists do of course flock to them, the main clientèle is usually local…
Don’t think children are averse to spending time in them either (although I imagine mine think a trip to a Food Market all part and parcel of any travels that we make), they usually love these colourful bustling places – especially in more exotic countries where there’s all manner of curious things to inspect (square melon anyone?) but also in child loving nations closer to home, where clever traders present our offspring with all manner of delicacies in the hope that their parents will be persuaded to buy something (we usually are!), and Vienna’s Naschmarkt is definitely a place they did well out of…
The Naschmarkt originated in the 16th century. The name is thought to have been derived from the German word for Ash (of the tree not cigarette remnant variety!) – buckets of which were used for transporting milk back in the day – and it has evolved to be the huge market that it is today, with over 120 stalls offering a vast range of produce, from all manner of spices to seafood, flowers to cheese, amazing regional wines, and of course plenty of wurst! It stretches an impressive 1.5 kilometres long – even longer on a Saturday when the popular flea market pitches up.
It’s not just about the produce here either, the Naschmarkt contains many a decent Viennese restaurant and (especially in summer months) once the stalls have packed up for the day, the bars and restaurants rule the roost, and this place is lively up until that final plate has been cleared away, and the last wine glass has been washed…
If time doesn’t allow for a lengthy sit down meal, do recharge your batteries at the ever popular Neni for a bowl of freshly made humous a giant would struggle to finish, bedecked with crispy warm pita breads. And afterwards might I suggest you sample a glass of prosecco, some beautiful regional wines, or if you are there later in the year maybe some Sturm (a speciality known as Federweißer down this way – wine still in the fermentation process) at one of the many market wine stalls…
The Naschmarkt is definitely a Vienna must see… Here’s how I feel about the entire city in a cup!…

I love visiting markets like these! Your beautiful photos really capture the colors and essence of this great market. Those flowers are beautiful and one can never get enough of latte art. You’re so lucky to be near such awesome markets like these.

We too visit a green market anywhere we go. Vienna’s Naschmarkt looks great, perfectly stocked with all kinds of yummy things. And 1.5 km long, is that true?!
bavaria says
Yes, it really is! It is quite thin though, so it would be much shorter I guess if you squashed it all together! Thanks Frank! :)
Adelina | PackMeTo says
I really like the Naschmarkt too. It’s a great place to pick up something for a picnic lunch. So many interesting things to look at when you’re wandering around.

Great isn’t it? Thanks Adelina! :)

One of the first thing I do is to visit a food market too, whenever I go to a new city!! I think they’re so fun and really gives you an idea of local life and cuisine. This one looks amazing (especially that giant bowl of hummus), and I’ll be looking forward to visiting when I’m in Vienna!

Great photos as usual. We went there in April and loved it too. Very different to the markets around me in Provence; one of the most surprising things for me was seeing the most enormous olives I’ve ever seen, something I wouldn’t associate with Austria, but from my local markets.
bavaria says
HUGE olives, I saw those too, and lots of glorious herbs and spices! :) Thanks Phoebe!

I’ve never tried anything like Sturm, would love to give it a whirl. This is one my favorite spots in Vienna, always starve myself before heading over there. Also, that “Ich bin ein Wiener Wurstelmann poster is great! Wonder if I can find a copy online somewhere…
bavaria says
Thanks Dave, it’s great isn’t it? I always head to the food markets first! You are welcome to have a copy of my photo if you like! :) Emma

Markets really are a way of getting to understand a place. We are very lucky that in St Albans we still have a very busy market twice a week. It is nothing compared to this though! I wouldn’t be able to resist all those fresh flowers and a cheeky glass of prosecco.
bavaria says
A good enough reason in itself to visit Kirsty! Thank you! :)
Penny A Residence says
That hummus washed down with some Prosecco looks amazing! I am trying to translate that sign, but my German is a bit rusty…
bavaria says
It’s something like, I am the wiener wurst man, who no-one hungry can see, take bier with it, and mustard and then go home or something like that. I am appalling at German however!!! :D
Katy Hill says
GORGEOUS pics! And LOVE that idea of putting veggies on top of the hummous! (fit for a giant! You are, indeed, correct!) A true celebration of food x
bavaria says
Thanks so much Katy! :) x
