A Snowy Carnival – Fasching – Munich 2013

You will be pleased to hear that after my initial dentist disaster here in Munich, we have found a perfectly brilliant, friendly and kind Dentist who is willing to speak English when my German fails me (i.e. most of the time).     My Mum’s staying with us for half term,  and she accompanied us to the Small People’s routine six-monthly check yesterday, and happened to mention that she was experiencing a bit of a problem.     And almost before she could utter another word, she was x-rayed, and booked in for an extraction that very afternoon – German efficiency at its finest!    There was no saving that poor tooth, but we did save Granny from thinking about it all day by taking her to the Tanz of the MarktFrau (a dance by the market women originating in 1897 and featuring costumes adorned with the goods they sell, and completely brilliant!) and the Carnival celebrations in the Viktualientmarkt.

We had been warned not to go to this, “far too busy for children” they said…  All I can say is they have obviously never experienced Carnival London style!     It was great fun, not overly crowded, and the atmosphere was fantastic!  Plus there weren’t any intoxicated people at that time of day (although I can imagine that changed later in the day!)…  The costumes were amazing too, leaving us feeling quite under dressed!

And because Small Boy was so cross that he wasn’t in fancy dress,  after Granny had recovered sufficiently from the (swift and relatively painless) dreaded procedure, we called into another Carnival later that afternoon so he could cast a few spells on people.   He made the glasses himself from pipe cleaners in case you’re wondering!

Oh, and although we did have pancakes for tea, the seasonal speciality in these here parts is these addictive donuts (or Krapfen) that come in hundreds of different flavours.       We had to sample a couple of course after lunch at The BackSpielHaus.     Don’t tell the dentist will you?

PS.  Feel free to contact me if you need the Dentist’s details, I would highly highly recommend her!

Love small boy’s outfit! Looks like great fun. And what a relief finding a good dentist – it’s so important and can be tricky when you live abroad. I’ve been through three here so far but, like Goldilocks, am finally content!

Thank you Mary… Yep, it is sooo important, and it’s the thing I dread the most when we move! :D Glad you’ve finally found one you like! :)

I was once forced by pain to have root canal treatment in foreign climes and was offered aesthetically pleasing white insert plastic-y stuff. Good idea, I thought and my teeth has less of a resemblance to potholes in snow.
When another dose of pain in another tooth caused me to visit another dentist in another foreign country, he promptly told me the aesthetically pleasing stuff was slowly poisonous and I needed to get rid of it. Root canal again.
How I wish I’d brushed my teeth better and ate less chocolate.

To have to go through root canal AGAIN sounds like a complete nightmare! Chocolate is evil! :D

Such a relief for your mum to get her tooth sorted out so quickly. Carnival looks like a perfect distraction – those gerberas hats are something else! And love that your son made HP glasses out of pipe cleaners. Impressive scar too :)

Thank you! Luckily I had an eyeliner in my bag or it would have been a catastrophe! :D

If it’s one thing my husband misses about this time of year its carnival. He has fond memories of it when he was young in Italy. He complains that Britain is the only European country that does not have carnival! I cooked some frittelle for him to ease the pain!

You are a nice wife… It’s funny isn’t it. Someone asked me what traditions we had, and looked at me as if I was slightly mad when I said we only ate pancakes! :D

Do you exercise a lot or eat at no other time than when you are sweet stuff whilst out eating?! I would be very large if I lived there! And they are very good glasses I say :)

It’s a living nightmare I tell you, and yes I do have to do a lot of walking and swimming! :D I don’t honestly eat junk all the time! :D Glad you like the glasses!

We totally forgot about Fastnacht this year. Too much going on at the moment. Over here the speciality is weird popadom looking things that are very very sweet but very very delicious. Can’t quite remember what they’re called – baby brain.

Love Small Boy’s outfit (awesome job with the glasses). Is that an owl he’s carrying too?

I know exactly what you mean, but I can’t remember what they are called either. Do they eat them on their own or with cream and fruit or something? Yes, that is an owl, pilfered from his sister’s toy basket! :D

I’m really liking the look of those cakes. Love how they always have a cake or pastry for the occasion.

I love that too, it’s a bit of a diet nightmare though! :) Thanks Erica!

Is that the coolest glasses or what? Not to mention that stance! Nothing like a superhero to save the day after a dental appointment :) Sorry about your mom’s lost tooth though – that’s never easy.

Thanks Pia! He is sooo funny! I am not going to tell him that granny has stolen his glasses to make the “skeleton” of one of her felt creations! She did say she would send him a real pair though! Thank you, she is fine now, and super impressed at the dentist we have here! :D

Although it looks really COLD BRrrr that festival looks like such fun. I’ve been to Munich for two short trips pre-kids. Now with kids I feel that I’m owed a week at Theme Erdig, lol. Glad to know that you found a good dentist.
