Heart shaped cake-pops for my almost Valentine’s day baby to take to school on the occasion of her 9th birthday… Granted they aren’t nearly as cute as the boss-eyed owl pops of last year, but having recently become aware that she missed sharing her birthday with King Cupid by a meagre couple of hours (something I think she was quite miffed about – until I pointed out that any future birthday gatherings might be quite boring surrounded by couples gazing into one another’s eyes!) they were deemed appropriate and necessary for her to take into class…
Her main birthday cake request this year most definitely met with my approval (and indeed may well have been influenced by my lifetime infatuation) – as having had a slight reprieve in the cake decorating department last year (with a simple chocolate cake demand), I had wondered what I might be creating this birthday. Thankfully Moomin Troll proved pretty straightforward (especially compared to CatBus circa 2012!), but a little part of me was slightly tempted to make her a “Little My” cake instead as Small Girl is so much like her in so many ways!
Birthdays always begin in our house with a specially requested breakfast and flowers around the birthday plate – a family tradition from my side that I have always loved. And then it was time to spend the day in Munich with her best friend, shopping, grown up lunching, and then hours spent trying on bangles, necklaces and huge clip-on earrings in many a shop. Which as lovely as it was, definitely gave me a glimpse into her teenage years, and made me wonder where the years have gone!
And now a little note to the birthday girl herself – as with my last blog (although I still need to get it printed!) this too will be made into a book one day for the Small People to look back on, and hopefully not ask me why we couldn’t have just had a conventional life…
So happy birthday sweetheart. I know I say it every birthday (with different ages obviously!), but I honestly can’t believe you are nine years old… It occurred to me recently that you have now spent more than half of your life away from the UK, which made me a little sad, especially given the people and things that you miss out on back at home. But I like to think (and hope!) that this life has given you an extra determination and tenacity of spirit, plus a natural curiosity of the world around you. Perhaps most importantly though it has helped shape your sweet nature, your infectious sense of humour and the empathy you have towards others – whoever they are and wherever they are from. Carry on like that my sweet, and you won’t go far wrong in life…
(Excuse Moomin Troll’s eye in this last picture, the Six Year old had been seen close by beforehand!!)
Love the cake. No confectionary is safe from finger lick marks in this house either.
I am hoping it was just a finger, I think it might have been a direct link… :D
Oh Wow! What a beautiful birthday cake!
Thanks Agata! :)
Lovely post, a happy (belated) birthday to your daughter!
Great cake and love the flowers around the plate idea. :) xx
Thank you :D xx
My son is 9 in a couple of weeks too, doesn’t time fly? Sadly he’ll have to suffice with taking sweets to school, but I do plan on making a cake. Looks like it will be a Minecraft one but at least it should be easy!
Love the sound of a minecraft cake! :) Thank you… It does fly too quickly!
What a beautiful post and fab fab cake! I adore your traditions x
Thanks so much Jane. :) x
Heart cake pops and a moomin cake? Sounds like my kind of birthday :-)

Happy Birthday to her…. I hope she had a wonderful day (sounds like she did). That cake looks awesome (you are a talent) and I just love your tradition of flowers on the table at breakfast time – how beautiful. Lovely post. X
Thanks so much! xx
Those cake pops are just divine, I really must learn how to make them and I adore the Moomin cake. Is it still on TV where you are?
It was definitely on TV in the last country we lived in, but I don’t watch so much Bavarian TV as they dub everything…. I hear it’s the best way to learn the language though, so perhaps I should watch more to help me improve! Thank you! :)
I have never baked birthday cakes or my oldest, I think it is a beautiful idea! x
Thanks Leonii! :)
A moomin cake!!! How brilliant :) I LOVE these little hearts I bet she was very popular when handing them out :)
She was definitely popular with the girls who thought they were really cool. Not so much with all of the boys! Had they been footballs however! :D
Oh how fabulous Emma, such a wonderful post. Beautiful photos too. Love the pops and the Moomin cake, look and taste (I’m guessing!) absolutely delicious. What a special birthday :)
Thank you Charly! :) Wasn’t so happy with the photos of the Moomin cake, but there was no time to spend taking high quality pics of it! :D
Those cake pops look brilliant as does the Moomin cake – I hope she had a lovely day x x

Happy birthday to her! The cakes are all amazing, I saw the heart cake pops and loved them and then scrolled down and the moomin is even more wow :D
Aw, thank you Anna! :)
What a wonderful way to start a birthday! I am definitely stealing your flowers around the plate tradition to go with our birthday pancakes. It sounds like a perfect day and I don’t think you can really top a Moomin cake, what will she ask for next year!!
Thanks Kirsty, I think that tradition came from my great grandmother once upon a time, I wonder if it had been passed down to her too? :)
Happy Birthday! Those heart-pops look super cute. As does the cake. Good enough to eat :-)
Thank you Vaichin! :)

And you are too kind… Thank you! :) xx
What a lovely birthday post and I love the heart shaped cake-pops…what a great thing for her to take into school…my daughter is about to turn 5 and if I gave her those to take in for her friends she would be SO happy!! How did you make them??! Hope it was a great birthday!
Thank you! If you click through the link about Owl cake pops, all the instructions are there! Good luck, they are not that difficult, promise! :)
Ah a lovely post, and how awesome is that Moomin cake!!
Thanks Sonya! :)
Hope it was a great day for Small Girl. Love the Moomin cake!
She had a fabulous day, thank you! :)
I loved all of this – especially the flowers around the plate! Ah…for a little girl….*sigh.* I’m very happy, though, that I was not blogging when my boys were small in the 90/early 2000s, because I’m not at all artistically talented or creative in the least – and would have felt very inadequate as a mother seeing things like you are able to make! Keep posting them, though – maybe they’ll inspire me and someday I’ll excel as a grandmother..; )
Have tagged you on a question thingy over at my blog if you have time and feel like doing it!
Thanks so much, and I imagine that one day you will make the best Grandmother! :) xx
oh wonderful such a heart melting post i do love you cake moomin and the pops are such a sweet treat
Thank you Helen! :) x
I think you’ve given both your children the most amazing opportunities and while sometimes it’s hard being far away from family and shifting and settling isn’t always ideal – your children are having the most amazing and memorable childhood, a childhood that will serve them well as adults.
9 sounds scarily grown-up.
Love the cake.
Thank you Gemma, I really appreciate that… xx
Happy, happy birthday to your special little girl! Heart pops, a Moomin Troll cake, roses around her breakfast (what a pretty tradition!), and that lovely message for her to read years on – you’ve done well, Emma. Beautiful post.
Thanks so much Pia! :) x
A very happy birthday to your daughter and I love the Moomin Troll cake!!
Thank you Sam! :) x
Beautiful post with a very special ‘wordy gift’ at the end for the birthday girls to treasure when she reads it in the future. Would love a piece of that cake with my English cup of tea. xx PS are all Moomin Trols male, I thought this one was a girl??!!
Thank you Mum… xxx PS. There is only one Moomin Troll, and of course he’s a boy!!!
Happy birthday! Great cakes & beautiful tradition with the flowers around the plate!
Thanks so much! :)
What a lovely sweet post. I’m planning to turn my blog into a book for my children one day too. I’ve only just realised our girls are the same age – growing up too fast!
Too too fast (although I do love this age, it is both sweet and hilarious!)… Thank you! :) xx
What a lovely post Emma. The cake pops are just gorgeous and the Moomin cake a triumph!
Thank you… We had to leave his head until last! :D xx
