We were awoken this morning at an ungodly hour by a hideous screeching coming from outside (thankfully). Instead of being annoyed about this however, both of us turned to each other and said “Do you think that’s Kes?” Because Kes (the only kind of pet we are ever likely to have) hasn’t been seen for over a week now. And for all my moaning about having to tidy up after him, I actually miss him.
I often work from our bedroom as it has the best views over the surrounding countryside, and I used to see him going out hunting, or winging it back swiftly if the weather was bad. He didn’t like the rain very much. But now he’s gone…
I wonder if it is my fault that he’s left? If he’s been disturbed too many times now that the weather is much warmer and the windows are constantly being opened? I am hoping that he left for love-nest reasons, as he was spotted a few times with a “friend” before he disappeared. I just hope that our little feathered (but incredibly messy) friend is happy out there somewhere.
And if for whatever reason your new home doesn’t work out Kes (yes I know it’s unlikely he’s going to be reading this), then just come back! Your balcony and your hunting grounds await you.

I must have missed that post, so I went back and read it – love! Have you ever read, ‘My Side of the Mountain’ ? It’s an American novel about a young boy who heads off to live in the wilderness and has a companion falcon. Anyway – we’ve always had dogs and I miss ours terribly, so have transferred all my affections in Seoul to the wild rabbits and ring-necked grouse that live in a nearby park. One year a sparrow built a nest in one of the hanging baskets on our back deck and got very fond of the little sparrow family and their loud and demanding babies. Here’s hoping that your kestrel comes back – I know how much you must be missing him!

Just had a quick read and kestrels will return to old nesting places, so maybe he’ll be back. We have bats around here but I only see them a certain times of the year. I loved Kes so much. I too will sob and sob through it.

I remember that film ‘Kes’ – such an unlikely topic for me to be attracted to (I’m not an animal person ans least of all birds) but I loved it.
