Travelling with babies can usually guarantee one thing – super early starts… So when you are sitting there bleary eyed at the crack of dawn, wandering what on earth you could do at that time of day (apart from go back to bed of course!) – there’s nothing for it but to turf the rest of the family out of bed too and head straight to the beach for breakfast…
When we lived by the sea in Denmark, beach breakfasts were a huge family tradition in the summer holidays. We would pack up a picnic (usually along with a flask of tea – we are Brits after all), a blanket and sun umbrella and head to the coast to enjoy the peace of an empty beach before the sun got too high in the sky and the crowds started to arrive. My older two still talk about it now so were more than happy when I suggested a Croatian beach breakfast that first morning…
This part of Istria has some gorgeous coastline to explore, a lot of it pebbly but that just means less sand in your croissant…
Our favourite beaches were around Rabac, a seaside town a short drive from Labin. Locals might raise an eyebrow if you tell them you are heading there for the day in the height of summer, as it can get Brighton packed – but not first thing in the morning…
It’s also fabulous for snorkelling (much to the excitement of the Small Boy who wore his constantly for pretty much one whole day just in case we stopped off. He actually got stuck in it at one point when he forgot to remove it before taking his t-shirt off) – forget the main beach areas and look for the railings at the side of the road, head down the steps and you will find teeny tiny rocky outcrops that are perfectly fine to chuck down blankets and towels and on and spread yourselves out for a morning of croissant eating and snorkelling in the crystal blue sea… Perfect!

It makes the day seem really nice and long too which is perfect for those all too quick holidays! :) Thanks Nichola!

Oh look at your boy and his snorkelling gear!
Breakfast at the beach sounds heavenly. My son doesn’t get up early enough for anything that resembles breakfast time but maybe Dougie and I could do that instead.

You both should give it a try. In my experience it means you get the best choice in the bakers too! :D xx

I love the sound of a breakfast picnic on the beach and you know I don’t think I’ve ever done it. Something to change.

If you don’t mind getting up super early, it’s really worth it! (:
