This is not your average glühwein. This is glühwein with a special little added extra, otherwise known as a Feuerzangenbowle (which I believe roughly translates as fire tong punch), and here’s how they do it… Take one steaming mug of authentic Bavarian Christmas Market glühwein. Top it with a specially twisted metal frame, and balance upon it a couple of sugar cubes soaked in finest rum. Place the frame and the cubes on top of the authentic Christmas Market glühwein, set on fire, and allow the molten liquid to drip through in to the jewel coloured nectar below. Take a big sip, and smile in the knowledge that the Christmas Market Season in Munich officially commences tomorrow, and there’s plenty more of this and countless other gastronomic delights ahead (as sampled at the Christmas Market at Munich airport yesterday, which always starts a little earlier than the rest!)…
And if you’re still cold even after that, then I definitely recommend a Dampfnudel (a steaming hot slightly sweet fluffy dumpling swimming in custard) to go with it – internal central heating, Bavarian style! Tis the Season after all…

I’ve noticed that the colder the climate the more comfort food there is. I could do with a portion of everything on that table just about now.
bavaria says
I have definitely noticed that too. I might lose some weight if we moved to a hot country! :D
Sally Sellwood (@Recipejunkie27) says
Just lush. I’ve got some friends who have a bigger version of this where they sit a special ‘cake’/cone of sugar on a metal skewer thing over the spiced wine, then soak the cone in rum and set it alight, so the rummy sugar dissolves into it. They have to get the cones from Germany, but so worth it. I could jst do with a glass of this (and one of those dumplings) right now…
bavaria says
I am liking the sound of the bigger version!! Thanks Sally! :)

Ooh…… I’m on the next flight over!!

I remember it all so well. We would visit the Christmas markets nearly every day when we lived in Dusseldorf. Every day! We adored them. We had so many visitors from UK in December and of course, we had to take them. Thanks for bringing back a good memory. Elinor x
bavaria says
Apart from Oktoberfest season, it happens to be our busiest month as well! Thanks for commenting Elinor! :) x
