“That building looks like something out of Star Wars” said the Five Year old, as we missed the exit for the second time on the final leg of our journey back to Munich… When we eventually got there, “that building” turned out to be our hotel – the Radisson Blu Frankfurt, which is pretty futuristic in more ways than one. It managed to keep with the intergalactic feel on the inside too, with an impressively futuristic concrete lobby – I think Small boy was quite disappointed we weren’t greeted by aliens. We had managed to put a few air miles to good use by booking two interconnecting rooms, a first as the Small People have been far too small for this option before… It made a pleasant change from having to listen to “he’s kicking me”, “she’s on my side of the bed” when we have all been crammed in together before, and they have been forced to share! I really liked this place, it went far beyond my expectations of a business hotel, with nice little touches such as a pillow menu, and enlightened buddhist bedside reading material, as well as the usual.
I really liked Frankfurt too, it helped with my “cross mood” no end, and reminded me of London in lots of ways, from the varied mix of people, to the tall sky scrapers in the Financial district. There’s a huge range of eating options too, and we ended up constructing a huge skyscraper of our own out of colourful plates in a tiny Japanese restaurant (might as well get them used to the food, we are going to Japan for a couple of weeks in June), before sampling the delights of a Gelateria for pudding.
Excuse the face. It seems we are incapable of posing for a photograph without it at the moment!
We ended our brief trip, with a brief walk around the old town, and admired the Dom from afar, but as it was dark we will need to come back to explore properly. First impressions count though, and they were definitely good.
And before we completed our journey early the next day, (having annoyed a whole lift full of grumpy Emirates hostesses in an attempt to make our way down to the car park – the lift doors had a mind of their own, honest!), we then spent the next twenty minutes picking up the contents of a box of Ewok Attack Star Wars Lego from the car park floor, having knocked it flying from the boot with a suitcase. The force definitely wasn’t with us that morning I can tell you…

I went to Frankfurt once. I remember the old town being very pretty and quite romantic in a Bavarian sort of way.

Thank you! It does look quite Bavarian in parts doesn’t it? :)

I quite fancy a trip to Frankfurt. It’s twinned with my city: Birmingham and lots of school friends went there on exchanges, plus that’s where our annual christmas market comes from. Sounds very cosmopolitan.

I really really liked it. It did feel cosmopolitan, you are right! Thank you! :)

This sounds like my kind of hotel. I’m a massive fan of concrete – used well, it’s quite beautiful. I’ve been back and to to Frankfurt over the years on many occasions for work but haven’t had the chance to see much more than the airport and not quite so nice hotels.
Have you been to Wiesbaden (about half an hour from Frankfurt)? A friend lived there for a couple of years and I took every opportunity to visit. It’s lovely.

Hello you! Hope things are going really really well with the new addition :) I love industrial things like that too, it is definitely a good example of how it can look beautiful! Haven’t been to Wiesbaden yet, it does sound lovely though!

That hotel looks awesome! A trip to Japan coming up too -cool – where are you going? We visited Japan for about 10 days pre kids – loved it – although modern it’s culture is so so different (and we had no clue what we were eating half the time!) Looking forward to your pics from that already!

Thank you. I think we start off in Tokyo and then I think we are going to visit some islands. Mr R worked there years ago, so he has stuff already planned (oh and he has already planned what he is going to eat!) :D

Oh no, not Ewok attacks! I think it is doomed that is its second accident… The fish tank in the Berlin hotel is a sight to be seen, R&S would definitely love it. V Jealous about Japan xx

Honestly, S, having just been told off by the grumpiest airhostess in the world (who accused him of pressing buttons, which made the doors keep opening as they were trying to make their lift move) was then not impressed at having to pick up the tiniest bits of lego. Luckily the floor had been painted light grey so it wasn’t too difficult a task! :D

Great to hear you had a ‘happy diversion’ on your journey back to Munich. The hotel looks amazing! Also looks like someone went home with ‘an English haircut! xx
bavaria says
Yep, a welcome diversion. We even met tiny ponies on the street! :D Hotel was definitely worth it, and the English haircut will have to do! :D xxx

We’re big fans of Radisson Blu hotels – loved the Berlin one. And hoorah for interconnecting rooms: one of my bug-bears that hotels don’t provide enough of these!
Japan in June – how exciting!
bavaria says
Thanks Trish! Must go and investigate the Berlin one soon then! Inter-connecting rooms – it’s the future! :D I know, I am so excited! :)
