A brief interruption of the serialisation of our Japan trip with a few picture’s from yesterday’s Auer Dult. This ancient market/folk festival takes place under the watchful gaze of the regal Mariahilf Kirche three times a year for Spring, Summer and Autumn (in May, July and in October), and is apparently also Europe’s largest crockery market (but I think it might also win the prize for biggest wicker basket market as well by the looks of things!)…
As is the case with most Bavarian Festivals, there is something for everyone – from plenty of shade provided by the stalls (it was 35 DegC here yesterday, and today promises to be just as hot, if not hotter), beautiful antiques, general household goods, a fun fair, plenty of tasty food options, and beautifully cool bier tents for lunch should you wish to put your feet up for a bit. The Auer Dult continues today and tomorrow, and is definitely worth a look.
A big thank you to Rachel from Arts in Munich for the recommendation. If you are in Munich, or planning a trip imminently, do check out her site for information on lots of great cultural Munich happenings.

love wicket baskets, I don’t know why they are so appealing. Not sure about the crockery – that seems a little bizarre. Looks like a fantastic place to browse.

It’s a really interesting place to browse. Next time it’s on, I will go twice, once with children and once without! :D Thanks Gemma! :)

The Auer Dult is one of my favorite festivals–we go most every time it’s on. Was disappointed that we were out of town for the the entire fest this summer, but will for sure make the next one.

Let’s go to the one in Oktober. On a School day!! :D

I see from the comments above you didn’t get to do much shopping. Browsing through markets doesn’t get any easier as children grow older, I’m afraid, especially if you have boys.
bavaria says
Hahaha… Thanks for that! My bigger boy is not much better!! :D

How many cups and bowls and plates and wicker baskets – looks fab! I don’t know if I already said, but I used to DJ quite a bit in Munich – and I remember the summer there being very hot indeed! X.
bavaria says
Thank you. Wish you still did, that would be fab! :) x

How amazing and not at all crowded by the look of it from the lovely photographs. x

No, it was a good day to go! Thanks Mum xxx

Beer! I’m in it for the beer :)

That is a very good thing to be in it for here! Thanks Brina! :)

I love these German festivals too, but not sure about the dead fish staring at you!! And 35 degrees is much better than rain all day… ;o) xx
bavaria says
But the fish tasted goooood! :D Yes, true enough, but now comes the fun part – huge lightening storms! We watched one for hours last night! :) xx
Rachel says
Everyone tells me Steckelfisch are delicious, but they do freak me out a bit. When I first came here, I imagined the whole “fish on a stick” thing to be a bit like fish lollies, and I can’t shake that thought.
bavaria says
Haha… I thought that too, and I still have to get Mr R to debone it before I will tackle one, but they are tasty and great bier food! :)
Lauren from Kiwi+Peach says
Thanks so much for posting this today. We will definitely have to check this out tomorrow.
bavaria says
No problem! Enjoy! :)
Midlife Singlemum says
I’d be in heaven with all that crockery.
bavaria says
I couldn’t actually decide myself, not that the Small people allowed me to inspect the crockery stalls properly! I shall go to the one in October sans enfants! :D
