A modern day plan of Munich
We might have been here for 4 years come November (hard to believe I know), but there are corners of this city that I am still discovering…
Munich’s Stadtmuseum is a prime example. Tucked away on St.Jakobs Platz just behind the Viktualienmarkt in the city centre, put this on your must see list if you are planning on visiting Munich soon; as you might imagine it contains quite an education about the city.
Checking out very lifelike models of traditional Bavarian Foodstuffs
From its very beginnings, to the present day, and everything in between, and almost everything associated with it (both good and bad) that make it so unique… From Oktoberfest to the Olypmics, traditions and food, modern art and not so modern art, tankards, adverts, the socialism years, WW2, Schafflertanzers, King Ludvig, and the day an elephant trampled people to death at Marienplatz (really), you will find it all here…
And, if that wasn’t enough, the upper floors contain a real treat for those of you who loved things like Scooby Doo as kids – a puppet/carnival museum!
Talk about somewhere you wouldn’t want to be locked in at night! Yes there are quite a few eerie specimens on display (whose eyes appear to follow you about the room), but there are some beautiful exhibits too, including the world’s oldest Merry Go Round Horse and Carriage set…
I adore this painting depicting a vintage Oktoberfest couple, I would love to know who it’s by…
You are even welcome to become the puppet master with the Pulcinella exhibit (or Punch and Judy if you are from my part of the world). Introducing the concept of this vintage tradition to the Small People proved quite interesting! Small Girl firstly thought I was making the wife beating, feeding baby to a crocodile storyline up, and looked at me as if I were quite mad when I told her we would watch it at various seaside resorts when we were small…
Dedicate an afternoon to this place at the very least, and do not miss the fantastic flea market section on your way out, where you may well discover an important artefact of your very own. The gift shop isn’t half bad either if you are looking for some really different Munchen souvenirs!

Wow this place looks amazing for the kids, and what wonderful pictures you have taken as well. xx

Thanks so much Helen! :)

Ohh this really sounds my kind of place to visit. I can’t believe it’s been four years now, where did that time go?
I also can’t believe I used to sit through Punch and Judy laughing at him beating his wife with a stick. What was our entertainment like in those days?
Thank you for joining in #TimeTraveller
Emma says
Thanks Mari. Time goes far far too quickly xx

Such an interesting place to visit, I love that there is something for everyone included here. Somewhere you could visit time and time again and notice something new.
Emma says
Thanks so much! :)

Ah, I’ve been here before, twenty years ago! And I’d completely forgotted about the place. Thanks for the memories :-) it’s interesting looking at it through a parent’s eyes now. My son would love the puppet section (as would I, still!)
Emma says
Thanks very much Nell! :)
Thinly Spread says
Oh wow! I love the puppets and the colours are fab – what a fascinating place!
Emma says
Thanks Chris, and right around the corner from the food market, you would love it! :)

We actually went today, based on your recommendation. (In town for 3 months, so you’re helping us tons.) The museum was interesting- especially the puppets (Kong terrified the kids). The people who worked there? Wow, rude attitudes really put a damper on the whole trip.
Can’t wait to see where you go next!
Emma says
Thanks Rachel! Glad you enjoyed it. We must have visited when the grumpy staff had their day off. Sadly you will come across a few grumps here, but don’t take it personally! I just think it makes the instances when you come across lovely happy bubbly Bavarians all the more memorable. PS. Talking of people who have got out of bed the wrong side – do not ever touch any of the displays in the Viktualienmarkt – you have been warned! :D

I love cultural history museums. They teach you so much about the region you’re living in or visiting and are probably my favourite type of museum. This one looks super interesting too and I like the modern design of it. Very unusual x
Emma says
Thanks Carolin. In hindsight it should have been one of the first places we visited when we arrived! :D x
Mary @AsturianDiary says
Oh, looks like the kind of place I could happily lose myself in for a whole day. (Although I might have to run away from some of the more macabre puppets!) You know, you’ve just made me realise how long it’s been since I visited a museum – shame on me! Must get some culture soon!! x
Emma says
Thanks Mary! I seem to go through Museum phases! :D x
Penny Carr says
I fear I may have nightmares about that puppet!
Emma says
Sorry Penny! :D

Ive only visited Muncih once, but several trips to Germany. My son was based in Paderborn and another son is being moved there in October with the British Army. The purpose of our visit in 2009/10 was to the Model Railway Museum with our youngest son after we watched a programme with James May about it, fantastic trip
Emma says
I was born in Paderborn many moons ago! :D Thank you! :)

Those puppets are creepy! But, the museum does look like it provides great facts about the city. Good to know for if we ever visit!
