A past week full of changes. Some obvious, some less so, and a few more that will be spoken about in good time…
A week full of head colds, sleepiness and no work for me. But on the positive side, a week full of the possible arrival of Spring, the arrival of my Mum who kept on top of everything and looked after us all, and a birthday for the Small Boy who turned a very big 8.
We celebrated at an Indian restaurant at his request, and finished with the most amazing cake made by a friend of mine. We almost had an issue when he didn’t want it to be cut, but I could completely understand that can’t you (do feel free to message me if you are in the Munich area and would like a similar cake, word has it this lady undertakes commissions from time to time!)?
Some of the changes are quite hard to accept, like the fact that my baby definitely isn’t a baby anymore… I feel like I blinked and he went from this to this almost overnight…
on his very first day at pre-school in Copenhagen aged 4
Birthday Breakfasts on the first morning of being 8…
Growing up has some advantages though, he makes us laugh every day with his infectious sense of humour, and his determination to hang onto his English roots, despite having only tasted his first Creme egg this week (he points out that it’s because I have usually eaten them before he has had a chance – a fact, ladies and gentlemen that might actually be true!).
Despite supporting a rather famous Bavarian Football team (much to the disappointment of his father), his sport craziness reaches far beyond that of the traditional beautiful German game. He also loves playing Rugby which his Twickenham Grandad is very happy about, and he did try to join a cricket team, but with just him and his Indian friend applying, it would have made for a supremely long game. He’s going to catch up on cricket somewhere else he says, and I believe him – determination really should have been his middle name! If he happens to be reading this whilst he’s supposed to be doing his maths homework, we love you so much sweetie, and we can’t wait to see what 8 brings for you.
There have been some changes this past week I do really approve of however, like the beginnings of a new season – Spring is beginning to show her face after a long grey (and white) Winter, and she is very welcome…
Rachel @ The Ordinary Lovely says
Congratulations on keeping those cream eggs away from him for so long. You, my dear, are selfless ;)
Emma says
I know! Sadly he knows all too well about them now, they will no longer be safe! Thank you! :D xx

Happy Birthday to the birthday boy.
I want that cake for my birthday (even if it means celebrating in Munich!).
I have no sympathy for anyone (even an 8 year old) that says I didn’t get the chance because you ate the chocolate first. Chocolate is CHOCOLATE, eat it immediately or lose!!!
(I shall be in Germany next week – not near you but I’m happy to be there all the same, it’s been a while)
Emma says
Thank you so much, and a birthday cake in Munich can be arranged you know! Have fun in Deutschland next week, shame you are not nearby! :) x

Yours is turning 8, mine just turned 18 – and I remember so vividly him being small and not being able to imagine him even going to school, much less heading off for university. *sigh* (Everything Trish says is correct, by the way.) I would have hated to cut into that marvelous cake, too! Slowly digging out of our boxes here, and experiencing my first English spring – too lovely for words (now that we’ve had some sun at last.) Hope you’re feeling better and the birthday was lovely. x
Emma says
Thank you Carolyne, where does time go? Glad Spring is showing it’s face at home too, it should be lovely in your part of the world! :) xx
older mum in a muddle says
Happy birthday to your gorgeous boy – hope he had a lovely day. That birthday breakfast looks scrumptious. Makes a change, spring, doesn’t it? We’ve had a load of colds too but hopefully they are now all on the way out as the weather gets that little bit warmer. And I’m not surprised he didn’t cut that cake! X
Emma says
Aw thank you. I hope the colds are departing your way, I think it seems like it’s been a long winter because of so many germs! :D Hope all is well xx
Brooke says
Did Candy make that darling cake? I agree, Spring is such a welcome relief!
Emma says
She did indeed. Surpassed all my expectations as I had only asked for a flat round yellow minion cake, amazing isn’t it? :D
Grace says
Mmmm I can vouch for that delicious cake and loved being there for your special birthday celebrations S also seeing you become an awsome Nano expert!! x
Emma says
It was lovely having you here… And yes, move over Lego! :D xx
A Patchwork Life says
What a cake! Amazing! Your post struck a chord with me – my youngest is about to turn 8 too – feels bittersweet – great to see her spread her wings and grow in confidence, but no escaping that tinge of sadness x
Emma says
Thank you T. Yes, it does feel really strange doesn’t it? Still small enough to get completely lost in imaginative play, but too big to hold my hand (at the moment anyway!)… :D xx
Sally Sellwood (@Recipejunkie27) says
Oh yes, the arrival of Spring is definitely welcome change! This post is beautifully poignant – I feel the loss of your baby as he turns into a ‘proper boy’ – they change so quickly. He has excellent taste, though, and the cake is fabulous
Emma says
Thanks so much Sally! :) x
Emma says
My boy is 8 this month too, where does the time go? I feel like I say that a lot lately, this year is just flying by, but I too welcome the longer days and slightly warmer temperatures.
I don’t think I’d want to cut the cake either!
Lots of love to you. x
Emma says
I can’t believe time goes so quickly, and almost a quarter of the year through 2015 already, scary! Thanks Emma xx
Jazzygal says
Such a lovely read and a big happy birthday to your boy. The big 8, huh? And that is really a fab cake! I do hope the other changes are good ones :-)
Emma says
They will hopefully all be good. Thanks Jazzy xx
Midlife Singlemum says
Happy Birthday to your 8yo. Happy Spring. And I’m intrigued about the other changes – a new country perhaps? Enjoy spending time with your mum. xxx
Emma says
Not quite yet R, but hopefully that will be coming up, I am ready for a change as I am definitely getting itchy feet again! :D Hope all is well! :) x

New season. New thing. New memories. x
Emma says
Very true. Thanks Susanna! :) x
Trish says
Happy birthday to your son. Treasure each day of him being 8,9 and 10 – once they turn 11 and go to secondary school time starts passing at speed.
Big fan of creme eggs here and they don’t last long with me around x
Emma says
I am dreading it… Thanks Trish. xx
Anya from Older Single Mum and The Healer says
I love to read about childrens birthdays – and this post is no exception. They always radiate love and intimacies that warm my heart and make it sing. Your son sounds fun and energetic and who can blame him for not wanting to cut into that amazing cake?! Lovely post :)
Emma says
Thank you Anya! And that’s a very lovely comment x

Happy birthday to your big boy. My eldest is now 8 and I marvel at how the time has flown. Hope you’re all feeling better after your head colds, etc. A great post – and a brill cake.
Emma says
Thank you Donna! :) x
Pinkoddy says
What a lovely post. The cake is amazing. He may have grown a lot by 8 but he still has a lot of growing to do – and plenty of time with you. I am glad your mom came to spend the special time with you.
Emma says
Thank you J. We are lucky we don’t live that far away! :) x
Mum of One says
Such gorgeous photos, as ever! I hope he had a lovely birthday and that you are getting a bit more sleep lovely lady. And that cake looks AMAZING!

Ah I totally wouldn’t want to cut into that cake! Lovely to have a birthday even if it does tug at the heartstrings x

Thanks Helen… I like birthdays but I would quite like to be able to pause them for me now! :D x
Sarah Pylas (Grenglish) says
I am so excited by the arrival of Spring. Makes such a difference to everyone’s mood. My son is 5 years old and it is scary how quickly time is flying. He seems at times so grown-up and others still so tiny. Oh, and FAB cake.
Emma says
It really does doesn’t it? Having lived both here and in Denmark now, people really need the sun after the winter!! :D Thank you.
Christie (A Sausage Has Two) says
Oh Spring will be very welcome… she’s creeping in very slowly here with the odd snowdrop here and there but it has been pretty miserable lately and I do feel a bit like we’re stuck in a holding zone between seasons!
Happy birthday, grown up chap with your AMAZING birthday cake. I can’t begin to imagine mine hitting 2 (in 7 months), let alone 4… let alone 8!!
Emma says
Today I think she has honestly arrived… 18Deg and warm and sunny! Perfect! Thanks Christie! :) x
