I am English, so of course I am going to tell you that a little bit of rain shouldn’t stop anything (Munich does often feel like it has the same amount of rain though – it just happens closer together!) and rain can have its good points sometimes, especially if you like photography! It can make for more interesting skies that’s a cert. – with clouds acting as a natural light box, you often get nicer colours too… And the very best thing? The streets are quieter, which in Venice is a real bonus…
And when your feet are tired of wandering, find somewhere off the tourist menu track for lunch… I can highly recommend the gorgeous Lineadombra which lies just behind the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute and sits on the water’s edge of the Grand Canal. Try a plate of beautiful handmade seafood pasta, and perhaps a glass or two of different, but very good wines from their extensive specialist wine list… And whilst you enjoy that long leisurely lunch inside in the dry, hand someone else the reigns and let them choose what you all see for the afternoon – just make sure they have the map the right way up…
And before you know it the clouds will probably clear, and the sun should be out again, and with it the entirety of the rest of Venice’s Guests… See? Rain doesn’t always have to be a bad thing…

A little rain. Some sun. Seafood pasta and wine. And some great photos! Not a bad day in Venice :-).
bavaria says
Not bad at all! Thank you! :)
Sally Sellwood says
Gorgeous photos as ever – took me right back to our trip to Venice, although we didn’t have the rain (we had lots of crowds though)
bavaria says
The rain is good for them! Thanks Sally! :)
Mary {The World Is A Book} says
Beautiful photos! This post brought back some great memories. It was pouring hard when we arrived in Venice but we liked exploring it in the rain too. They even put up those raised walkways due to the flooded waters which made for a fun adventure. We can’t wait to go back.
bavaria says
I remember seeing people swimming on the news in the flood waters on St. Marks square, I think it was last year or the year before? Thank you Mary! :)
Adelina | PackMeTo says
Lovely photos. Is that a cat peeking over the ledge of a window there? How risky! Venice seems just so romantic and a little bit of rain never hurt anyone.
bavaria says
Yes, it is a very daring cat! Thank you Adelina! :)
older mum in a muddle says
Gorgeous, gorgeous beautiful post. The cat hanging out of the window is amazing – a brilliant capture, the sort of thing you’d see on a postcard! X
bavaria says
Thank you S. Much appreciated! :) xx
Heather says
Thank you for sharing this on the #SundayTraveler link-up. I loved your photos. I’ve heard such mixed reviews of Venice, but I’d still really like to go! – Heather, Life of a Traveling Navy Wife

Just remember that parts of Venice will be busy, but not all of it will… It’s easy to just duck down an alleyway and find the real thing away from the tourists. It’s quite ethereal at times, and definitely worth seeing at least once! :) Thank you…
Dave Cole says
That langoustine looks delicious! Thanks for the walking tour of Venice – it seems like there are a lot of cute alleyways to explore on a rainy morning.
bavaria says
So many, including plenty of empty ones when the crowded places get too much! Thanks Dave! :)
Michele {Malaysian Meanders} says
I’m going to be in Venice next week. I checked the weather report and was disappointed that rain is predicted, but you are having me feel better about it. I think I am imagining a strong Malaysian tropical thunderstorm, but perhaps it will just be a gentle sprinkle? I will have to remember that restaurant since your photo of the food looks delicious.
bavaria says
Have fun! I would really recommend that restaurant Michele… And seriously, don’t worry about the rain. I am sure it won’t be Malaysian thunderstorm like! :D
Jessica @ Independent Travel Cats says
Nice, you got some beautiful shots of Venice. Rains really does reduce the amount of tourists out at any destination it seems and allows for some peaceful time for those who are brave enough to venture out. It rained it seemed like almost day during our trip to Germany last year but we had some places all to ourselves because of it:)
bavaria says
Thanks Jessica. Yes, we had an awful lot of rain in Germany last year. So much so our house got flooded. They still tell me that it rains in England every day though! It doesn’t… :D
Upasna says
What stunning pictures! I’ve always wanted to visit Venice, and this post makes me wish it happens sooner rather than later :)
bavaria says
Thank you Upasna! :)
brinabird and son says
I do have a soft spot for Venice and definitely more enjoyable when you don’t have to focus on the tourist attractions. The fun of Venice is walking the streets and getting lost!
bavaria says
That’s one of the main reasons we go Sabrina, that and the cicchetti! :D
frankaboutcroatia says
Photos I take on a rainy day just look grey. And then every serious photographer tells me that the best time to take photos is just after the rain. Your photos are gorgeous, so I guess this must be true. I’ll keep trying :). Good point on having a Venice almost for yourself when it rains.
bavaria says
Thanks so much Frank! Yes, honestly it is true about the rain/photography thing… My Silent Sunday pic from today was taken just before a huge rain storm and that really is hazy! :D
Elena says
It’s been raining badly on our 2nd day in Venice, but it hardly spoiled my impressions of the city! It’s beautiful in any weather!
bavaria says
I think so too Elena, thank you. I hope it stops soon for you! :)
Marissa says
Beautiful city, rain or shine!
bavaria says
It is isn’t it? Thanks Marissa! :)
Corinne says
I love the way colors pop in the rain… but it is hard to keep the camera dry. Love Venice. Rain or shine.
bavaria says
It can be can’t it? Then you have to just stop for coffee and cake!! :D Thanks Corinne! :)

Stunning photos ! Looks like an amazing place to walk around – even in the rain!

Stunning city! Venice is certainly on our to do list along with Rome x #betterphotosproject
bavaria says
Thanks Kirsty… Both are equally gorgeous! :)
Phoebe @ Lou Messugo says
Love Annie’s comment! I get your points about rain, particularly the crowds, but I’m so much a sun and blue skies person that I can’t help but be a little disappointed if I’m somewhere for a short time and the weather is bad. However, I’m always happy to have a long lunch no matter what and happy to get restaurant tips.
bavaria says
I think I have been to so many places in the rain now, I must be used to it! :D Thanks Phoebe! :)
Aly says
I always love your photos Emma, even the photos of the pigeons and the cat capture a story. My went to Venice when she was in her 20’s and she has always wanted to go back to visit again.I think I’ll have to arrange it for me and her to go one year.
bavaria says
You should, I am sure you would both absolutely love it. And thank you xx
Helen Neale (@KiddyCharts) says
Lovely walk – lovely photographs, and clearly not worth worrying about a little bit of rain…not sure about that cat leaning out the window though…its about to loose one of its nine lives methinks! ;-)
bavaria says
Thank you Helen… I think he had done that before! :D
otilia says

Right that’s it. I’m packing up motherhood / life in the UK /blogging and I’m heading to Venice to become a bohemian artist type so I can live in a colourful building and paint nude menfolk all day long #fact

Let me know when you leave and I will pack up and drive down! :D
Liz Burton says
Just beautiful! I shall try and look on the rain more positively from now on!
bavaria says
Thank you Lizzie! :) x
kelloggsville says
lovely photos. Cog is there in a few weeks time. I am very worried about her getting lost in those crowds.
bavaria says
Thank you… Try not to worry too much, it might get crowded in parts (mostly around St. Marks Square) but it’s not really big enough to get truly lost in… Believe me, I am an expert at that! :D
Mary says
What a beautiful post. I feel like I’ve just spent a glorious leisurely afternoon in Venice and picked up some photography tips on the way x
bavaria says
Thank you Mary! :) x
