A little belated Happy Birthday post for the Small Boy…. It was actually a few days ago now, but it wouldn’t seem right to not document it on here – in the hope that he will look back on this one day…
I have been quite lucky this year, as he too gave me a reprieve in the birthday cake department! He opted to hold his party at one of Munich’s few soft play centres (as hellish as their UK counterparts – but often the easier party option!). Having been to a party here previously where the birthday boy had a rather spectacular hedgehog birthday cake, Small boy then got it into his head that it was absolutely mandatory to have the same, and I for one wasn’t about to argue…
Even the class cakes were easier than last year’s Yodas, and took into account his lifelong fixation with everything Lego (for they are Lego heads in case you can’t tell!!). In the two and a half years that we have lived in Munich, it’s amazing how many more cake decorating things are suddenly available – hence the near perfect yellow tone thanks to cake-melts found in town. No experimentation necessary with white chocolate and food colouring this year… As ever, if you want to make them yourself you can find out how here.
The day after his party was actually his real birthday, and the sun came out properly for the first time this year – reader it was even WARM! We gave him a few outdoor options to maximise family Vitamin D exposure, and he chose to spend the day climbing like a spider at Waldkletterpark Oberbayern . Dangling by a rope from the treetops isn’t my idea of a birthday treat, but if you are newly Seven, it is apparently the best thing ever (Mr R. took the photo below just in case you are wondering!!)….
Afterwards we popped out for dinner, followed by birthday ice-cream at the spectacular der Verrückte Eismacher (the Crazy Ice Cream Maker!). We first learned about this place at Oktoberfest last year, when we got talking to a top-hatted character waiting for the same train home – it’s not every day that you see someone in a top hat in Munich after all! Anyway, when we parted he gave us his card and told us we must visit his Ice Cream Parlour – like I am going to say no to that! And I am pleased to say I can highly recommend the artisanal ice cream here, and I am always intrigued by the slightly unusual flavours on offer – weissbier or gorgonzola anyone? I can vouch that the burned almond flavour is truly delicious, and the birthday boy enjoyed sampling Oreo and Easter Egg amongst others in this shrine to Alice in Wonderland… If it is your birthday by the way, make sure you mention it, for you might even be serenaded by the Veruchter EisMacher himself, complete with accordion (and top hat of course!)…
Anyway, a little note to my birthday boy… Happy Birthday my sweet! I loved watching you at your party the other day – it was a good reminder as to exactly why we have chosen this life for however long it might last (and believe me I can really do with those at the moment!). Thanks to this perhaps, you have a natural ability to converse with pretty much anyone wherever they might be from (and quite often choose to do so now in German too, which amuses me greatly – and makes me slightly jealous at the same time)! You are quite the clown amongst your friends – something I had always had my suspicions about, and your laugh (along with that of your sister’s) is definitely one of my favourite sounds in the World (and I will admit to telling you jokes featuring your favourite word “Poo” just to hear an extra chuckle when I need to!..). There are of course times that you might be at each other’s throats, but I am so grateful for the bond that being a third culture child has given you and your sister. Today I saw an essay she had written at school on Happiness. Halfway down she had written “Happiness is my little brother – even if he is the most annoying person on the planet”… don’t tell her I told you! It goes without saying that the pair of you are mine…

The lego heads are fantastic. Z is 7 next week, I might have to give them a go. xxx
bavaria says
Brilliant, they are so easy to do! Hope he has a lovely day! :) xxx

A wonderful birthday. Admire his ability to speak German which seems the most over complicated language. The cake pops are genius. Although, we have loads of lego heads floating about which drives me insane. I like lego people in one piece, I’ve spent time attempting to reassemble only to have them taken apart the following day. Why is that????
bavaria says
It really can be! :D Thank you, I know what you mean – I wish Lego would kind of glue them on… We have a similar problem with their stupid little arms too which are a nightmare to plug back in! :D
Ruth says
Oh WOW! Those lego head cake pops are absolutely amazing. T’s 5th birthday is next week and he would be over the moon if I managed anything approaching that so I think I’ll have to give it a shot. Thanks so much for the inspiration :) x
bavaria says
They are easy, I promise. Just keep sticking them in the fridge between stages and that helps a lot! :) x

Those cake pops look amazing and I would show them to my daughter but then she would expect me to make them and I am definitely challenged in the baking department!
I also love the sound of the ice cream place, I always love trying weird and wonderful ice creams.
bavaria says
Thank you… They are honestly not that hard! :D You would definitely love this ice cream place then, plenty of weird and wonderful flavours! :D

Sounds like a fab birthday! It’s so lovely to read about your daughters quote. I honestly think there is nothing that makes me happier than seeing my boys being kind to each other. Long may it continue!

I am so glad that despite the trials and tribulations of living as an expat you are all enjoying beautiful days out in the sunshine and parties filled with chocolate hedgehogs and legoheads. As long as you have your munchkins with you there will always be at least a little bit of happiness amongst the frustrations and madness. Can I also say that it is so cool that you went to an ice-cream parlour on the recommendation of a man you met in the street with a top hat on!
bavaria says
That is so very true Kirsty, thank you! :) He did say it was his ice-cream parlour, or I wouldn’t have bothered! :D
Alexander Residence says
I read the whole post and it was so lovely, but I just kept thinking how cool are the cake pops!

It’s still a nice age though isn’t it? More grown up, but still little really! :D Thank you Penny xx

Sally Sellwood (@Recipejunkie27) says
What a lovely post Emma – you sound like you needed some cheer and the birthday gave you that. Hope you are OK? I can confirm that hanging from ropes pretty much cuts it when you’re 10 too, so I suspect you are sorted for the next few years at least!
bavaria says
Thanks Sally… All is well, just missing home tis all! That’s birthdays sorted for the next few years at least then! Thanks for that! Hope all is well, and the new house is treating you kindly! :) x
