This is Munich* – bought for the Six Year Old for his Birthday and pored over by both of his parents before being wrapped up. I have to recommend this book.
Both of us learned so much that we didn’t know about Munich, thanks to its author Miroslav Sasek who lived here for many years. Originally printed in 1961 and reissued last year, only a couple of topics are no longer relevant (the currency for example – but who knows, given the current climate I guess there’s a chance that it might be relevant again one day!), but most of the beautiful and totally brilliant pictures are still up to date. My personal favourite is the descriptive picture of the Föhn, the dry alpine wind that is well-known to cause both beautiful clear days, and some say terrible headaches (something I was quite sceptical about before, but now I am not so sure)!
There are several books in this series covering cities and countries across the world, each giving a great sense of what a place is like. This is a great addition to any book shelf, and a must buy for families relocating to or even just visiting this part of Bavaria…
Why yes you will!
*we weren’t asked to write about or mention the above, we just loved it and felt we should tell you about it if you didn’t already know!…

I love this artwork. When I worked in a bookshop in London I was in charge of the childrens section and I LOVED it. I discovered so many amazing styles of illustrations and felt very covetous about them all! It’s nice to have lovely books on the shelves!
That sounds like the perfect job! Thanks Michelle… :)
Oh no, just reading another comment. Definitely not a joke! Just from another era. Charming beyond belief.
I adore these books. We bought our girls the Edinburgh and London ones when we moved to each city. We used them as little points of reference for visiting sites. So great to see how things have changed. They are iconic.
The next place we move to will have to feature in one of these books…! Thanks Sarah! :)
I love those pictures! I have something similar for Zurich and it’s hilarious. I think it was written as a joke though.
The whole book has them, the others are the same… Definitely not a joke, but very sweet! :D Thank you…
ooooooh I want the London one!
I want all of them! Thanks Gemma! :D
I love the Sasek books! We have Britain and London, and we refer to them whenever the homesickness sets in. Will have to check out Munich now too :)
Thanks Rachel, I am liking the look of the Venice one too!
I’ve never seen these before but they look great. I will look out for them.
Thanks Sally, they are gorgeous. It’s the illustrations that do it for me!
Wonderful illustrations! Really looks like a book to treasure. I’m off to check out some of the others in the series :)
They are lovely, thank you! I am currently eyeing up This is London… :D
I think I would love to own this book, it looks wonderful. From the vibrant yellow cover to the smiley figures in national costume, I’m sure it will bring a smile to the readers face. A lovely share, thank you. x
Thanks Sarah! :) x
