A little interval in Berlin posts for something festive – a Seasonal Schloss for your perusal…
Don’t be mad, but I will admit to being a little “Christmas marketed out” having lived here for four years now. Towards the end of our time in Denmark I felt the same way about Tivoli too, having visited countless times; but that doesn’t mean that I am not a sucker for a unique Christmas Market, or one that’s in an unusual location. Definite favourites are Tollwood (which isn’t strictly a Christmas market) as it’s so different each year, and the market on the tiny but beautiful Frauen Insel, and now this – the Christmas Market at Burg Trausnitz in Landshut.
ancient ramparts
Perched high above Landshut, this 13th century castle (once the seat of the Dukes of Bavaria) had a distinguished past up until the 18th century, when it became various things including a prison, a barracks and a cholera hospital. Nowadays it opens its doors to visiting guests who can explore its medieval halls and ancient chapels, before stopping off in the 15th century restaurant for a bite to eat (or if the weather is feeling kind, outside in the bier garten at the back to admire the spectacular views and appreciate the bier of course!)…

And at this time of year, for a couple of days, Burg Trausnitz serves as a spectacular backdrop for a spot of seasonal shopping, and festive face stuffing opportunities. The easiest way to get there is by the laid on park and ride buses by the way, ensuring that you miss the wrath of livid old local ladies (we didnt know there was a park and ride)…
taking in the Christmas Markets in comfort
Sadly, as the old saying goes all good things must come to and end, and this market is already over and done with for another year, but should you be thinking of visiting next Christmas, put it on your must see list. It’s definitely one not to miss.
And if you are really lucky you might even bump into Saint Nick…
‘…festive face-stuffing opportunities’ sums it up very neatly!
It really is exactly that! Thanks Trish! (: xx
Such an interesting place to visit! I love that gorgeous winter light. :-)
Thank you Krista! (:
I love a good Christmas market but I do think they get too busy and you can’t get in properly to look at things without being elbowed and pushed sometimes.
Love your photos x x
They can indeed, which is why I am very selective about which ones I go to now! Thanks Cass! (: xx
Ooh it looks like a lovely. Love markets, especially Christmas ones! xx
It’s just as well you love markets really! :D xxx
Thank you for this insightful information because I really do want to go to a German Market at least once in my lifetime and I do like a bit of planning. it doesn’t look as busy as I would imagine either.
I think most Christmas Markets are quiet during the day, they tend to be busiest at night when it’s all twinkly lights and steaming gluhwein! :D Thanks Joy! (:
Great deal of luck with the weather; wonderful pictures. Although the little one doesn’t seem really amused. :-)
Maybe this link is helpful for your next trips to Bavarian castles (If you haven’t already this information):

It is indeed a wonderful place for a Christmas market. Thanks for taking us
It was lovely having you here! (:
Lovely afternoon out, perfect place for a Christmas Festival. Better food and goodies than usual too.
It was worth being shouted at by old ladies and everything! :D xx
Ohh look at your little man, so cute. I’d love to go to a Christmas market, I’ve never been to one outside of the UK yet. Mich x
The UK does seem to be getting very good at them now Michelle! Thank you! (:
It looks like a lovely place to visit – and the weather looks fantastic too! We’ve got a German Christmas market in town at the moment, you won’t be surprised to discover that it’s not in the same ball park as this one!
There are some here that sell tat too, believe me! :D Thanks Sarah! (:
Beautiful photos as always, especially of the newest member of the family.
Thanks so much! (:
We have a big German market in Birmingham and it is reportedly the largest outside of Germany but there is nothing like going to a traditional one like this.
This looks like a fabulous day out …. maybe next year eh?
You should come over for the markets here Donna, I think you would really enjoy them! (:
ooh it looks rather fabulous to me!
Thanks Becky! (:
